Artist Mr G set to inspire rangatahi around the motu with murals of iconic wāhine toa, including Football Ferns

Kicking off this week, internationally renowned artist Mr G (Graham Hoete) is embarking on Tūmanako 2.0 – a project to celebrate the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ that will see six large-scale murals being created around the motu, with the help of young female artists from small town communities around the country.

The artpieces celebrate past, current and future generations of wahine Māori and indigenous athletes by painting murals in their honour, including Māori Football Ferns to show aroha and support for them as they represent Aotearoa at the biggest women’s sporting event in the world.

Through his work, Mr G wants to raise the profile talented wahine artists who may not typically receive these opportunities, as well honouring indigenous wāhine toa athletes to inspire rangatahi and tamaraki by seeing themselves in these spaces.

Tūmanako2.0 kicked off in Auckland this week, with Mr G painting the “Aotearoa Legends Wall” at Eden Park, honouring one of Aotearoa’s greatest FootballLegends, Amber Hearn.

To get amongst the creativity and watch the live art unfold in Wellington, Hamilton and Dunedin – follow Mr G and The Squad on Instagram.

The project seeks to create a lasting legacy for Aotearoa New Zealand and our communities as a co-host of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.
